Cultural Capital 60 x 6
We value our children’s Social, Moral, Spiritual & Cultural (SMSC) development highly at Laycock. We facilitate this in many ways and ensure this is a thread which runs through our entire curriculum. We have worked in partnership with Islington’s Cultural team to introduce 60 x 6. We aim to give each child 60 cultural experiences by time they leave Year 6, as we believe this supports their learning through real life experiences.
Some of these experience are listed below:
National Gallery
Sikh Temple
Spirit of the Wild
Estorick Gallery
Islington Library
Tall Stories Theatre Company
Centurion Theatre
Little Angels Theatre
Royal Opera House
Barbican Centre
Canal Museum
Natural History Museum
Science Museum
Whitechapel Mosque
London Symphony Orchestra
Hackney Picture House
Museum of Childhood
If you have any questions related to 60 x 6 please contact SLT or speak to Miss James.
Physical Education
Each child from Year 1 to Year 6 has two 1 hour PE sessions per week. These are facilitated by our internal PE coaches or external providers (GLL, Arsenal, Chance to Shine).
Our coaches provide learning intentions and lessons plans and all lessons are differentiated including an element of challenge for more able children.
Although many of the topics in PE are repeated from one year to the next, we ensure the skills taught are progressive, fun and engaging.
Laycock takes part in a number of external competitions throughout the academic calendar including:
- Islington football league
- Netball
- Basketball
- Hockey
- Athletics
- Boccia
- Panathlon
- Gymnastics
If you have any questions about PE or competitions, please speak to Sharifa or Miss James.
Religious Education
At Laycock, we follow the Islington scheme of work for RE. This was developed by Islington and supported by a number of other schools in the borough including Laycock. The scheme of work covers a number of different religions and gives the children a general overview of each, so the develop a basic understanding.
Year groups are given 5 questions to cover over the course of each academic year. Each question allows them to investigate how these faiths impact the people’s lives who study them. This is done in a variety of ways:
- workshops
- exhibitions
- visits to places of worship
- role play
Government guidance states that schools should teach RE to support children’s:
- Spiritual, moral, cultural and social development
- Personal development and wellbeing and
- Understanding of community cohesion
If you have any questions, please speak to a member of SLT or Miss James.
Collective Worship (Time 2 Think)
Our children take part in Collective Worship 3 times per week in class and twice per week during assembly. After consultation with the children, staff, parents and also taking in to account the demographic of the school, we chose to re-brand Collective Worship and call it Time 2 Think (T2T).
T2T sessions give children the time to take part in discussion as a class. The children may watch a video, look at a picture or read a statement and the discuss whether they agree or disagree. The children also take part in yoga and mindfulness sessions.
These sessions do not have a religious connotation. They are meant for quiet reflection and/ or discussion.
